Visual outcome after cataract surgery in SLE patients in north east India

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To review the visual outcome in patients with systemic lupus erythromatosus having cataract after cataract surgery in North east India

Setting:

This study was a retrospective study carried out on SLE patients reporting at Ramakrishna Mission Hospital, Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, India for cataract surgery

Methods:

The records of 12 patients (16 eyes) of Systemic lupus erythromatosus who were referred by the rheumatologist who underwent phacoemulsification with hydrophobic foldable IOL implantation between 2008-2010 were evaluated retrospectively. All the patients were on immunosuppresive therapy. All the patients had posterior sub capsular cataract and they were classified according to LOCS III. The visual outcome and complications were analysed.

Results:

Mean age was 31.42 yrs. The mean follow-up was 14.6 months (range 5 to 24 months). Of the 12 patients 10 were tribal patients and 2 were non tribals. The mean preoperative LogMAR BCVA was 0.60. 12.5% had Posterior subcapsular (PSC) grade 2, 31.25% had grade 3 PSC and 31.25% had grade 4 PSC. PSC grade 5 was present in 25% cases. Only 2 patients had other ocular complication of SLE in form of dry eye syndrome other than cataract. All the patients had good postoperative visual outcome (average LogMAR BCVA 0.03) at last medical visit. The most frequent postoperative complication was posterior capsular opacification, which developed in 3 eyes. Other complications were mild fibrinous reaction in 3 eyes.

Conclusions:

The outcomes of cataract surgery in patients with SLE's disease were good. All the patients regained and retained a good visual outcome with very few postoperative complications. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
