Femtocataract surgery results in Indian eyes

Abstract Details



Purpose:

To evaluate results and complications of the first 400 eyes operated for cataract with femto-second laser in a tertiary care centre in North India

Setting:

Tertiary care centre in North India

Methods:

400 eyes were taken up for femto-phaco-emulsification using the LenSx Femto-second laser. Complicated cases such as phacomorphic glaucoma, post retinal detachment, poorly dilating pupils and hard cataracts were also taken up for femto-cataract surgery. Intra-operative parameters including total phaco-time, capsulorhexis formation, incision ease and post-operative parameters including UCVA, BCVA, surgical induced astigmatism and endothelial cell loss were monitored.

Results:

UCVA of >20/30 was seen in 96 % eyes and 20/20 in 90% eyes. Arcuate incisions to correct co-existing astigmatism were performed in 184 eyes while all incisions were on the steeper axis. Anterior Capsular tags were noted in 5 eyes in the first 50 cases, one of which was pulled accidentally leading to a PC tear. No case of nuclear drop was noted. Incision opening difficulties were noted in 3 of the first 5 cases but not thereafter. With the upgraded software, free floating capsulorhexis, smoother incisions and reduced laser and surgical time were the norm. all complicated cases were also smoothly performed and premium IOLs inserted in majority of the cases

Conclusions:

Femto-second laser assisted cataract surgery offers improved results after a short learning curve. Improved UCVA & BCVA, short phacotime, tackling of co-existing astigmatism and reduced endothelial cell loss are advantages with a minimal complication rate FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
