5 year follow-up results of the bag-in-the-lens implantation technique in the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Hospital

Abstract Details

Purpose:

Analyzing the results after 14 implantations of the Morcher 89A intraocular lens (IOL), including two toric IOL using the bag-in-the-lens technique.

Setting:

14 eyes from 10 adult patients who underwent cataract surgery performed by a single surgeon between January 2008 and December 2013 in the Ophthalmology department Hospital of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences` were included in the research.

Methods:

Several parameters were investigated, including the best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), stability of the IOL, complications, presence of posterior capsular opacifications. The pre-operative data were collected using the patients' medical records and each patient underwent a series of controls after the operation.

Results:

The female: male ratio was 1.5:1; the average age at operation was 38.6 years (±9.1). The patients underwent on average 3.5 follow ups, the first one was on the first day postoperatively and the last one after 1073.9 (±934.6) days. The average BCVA before surgery was 6/20 (±6/30); it was 6/6.5 (±6/60) 1 day after the surgery and on the last control. The day after the surgery, 50% (N=7) of the operated eyes presented with a 6/6 visual acuity, 28.6% (N=4) with a 6/6.5 visual acuity, 7.1% (N=1) with a 6/7.5 visual acuity and 14.3% (N=2) with a 6/8.5 visual acuity. On the last follow up, the BCVA was stable in 64.3% (N=9), improved in 14.3% (N=2) and decreased in 21.4% (N=3) when compared to the first control. Postoperative astigmatism was present in 4 eyes (28.6%). All 14 eyes benefited from the surgery, the average BCVA was increased by 6/10 up to the last control. 14 implanted IOL (100%) were rotationally stable. There were no operative or postoperative complications. Posterior capsular opacification (PCO) wasn't identified in any of the patient.

Conclusions:

1) VA improved for all patient after surgery. 2) IOL were rotationally stable. 3) No PCO and operative and postoperative complications were identified in any implanted eyes, up to 5 years after the surgery. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
