Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the long term results of patient's visual function 6+ years post implantation of a diffractive intraocular lens (ReSTOR, Alcon, Texas USA)

Setting:

Ophthalmos Research and Therapeutic Institute, Athens, Greece. Ygeia Hospital, Athens, Greece.

Methods:

Retrospective study including Cohort of 96 eyes (50 patients) that had uncomplicated surgery by the same surgeon between 2005-2008.Distance visual acuity was measured with a modified Snellen chart and near visual acuity was assessed with a jaeger near card at 35cm. Additional information was collected on: Dependence on glasses Presence of photopic phenomena Contrast sensitivity and Overall patient's satisfaction

Results:

80% of eyes had CDVA >=20/25, 86,4% had CNVA J2 or better. Over the six year folow up period there was an increase in the number of eyes that have developed new macular changes as well as progression of the existing maculopathy. Nevertheless there we found no difference between the CDVA and CNVA of eyes with normal fundus and those with early macular changes. Contrast sensitivity was reduced in all eyes especially in those with macular changes. Overal 80,4% of patients were satisfied with their vision, and 17,4% of patients(binocular implantation) needed glasses for either distance or near.

Conclusions:

Good visual function maintained at 6 years even for eyes with minor macular changes FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
