Abstract Details
Purpose:
To determine the visual outcome in eyes undergoing primary aphakic artisan lens implantation due to complicated cataract surgery (posterior capsule rupture and vitreous loss with no remaining capsule for lens implantation), and to report the incidence of complications during the surgery and postoperatively.
Setting:
Imam Hossein Medical Center, Tehran, Iran.
Methods:
This retrospective analysis of 40 eyes from 40 patients undergoing primary artisan lens implantation after complicated cataract surgery to treat aphakia; was performed in Imam Hossein Medical Center, Tehran, Iran from 2007 to 2010. An AC 205- Ophtec BV (Ophtec, Groningen, Netherland) was implanted in all eyes. Complete eye examinations were performed preoperatively and in the first day, first week, first month, three and six months postoperatively. Patients were followed-up for at least 6 months (29.9 ± 14.1).
Results:
A total of 40 eyes from 40 patients (31 males and 9 females) with mean age of 69 ± 12 were reviewed. At final follow-up 81.8% of the eyes achieved best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA) better than that measured pre-operatively, 9.1% of the eyes matched their pre-operative BSCVA and 9.1% of the eyes achieved BSCVA worse than that measured pre-operatively. In this group 4 eyes (10.5%) had persistent corneal edema; 1 eye (2.6%) had retinal detachment; 1 eye (2.6%) had anterior ischemic optic neuropathy; 7 eyes (18.4%) had cystoids macular edema; and 1 eye (2.6%) had increased IOP at the end of the follow up period.
Conclusions:
This study suggests that despite the probable complications after primary artisan aphakia lens implantation, these lenses are beneficial to improve visual outcome in aphakic eyes. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
