Abstract Details

Purpose:

Total corneal power (TCP) describes the total corneal astigmatism with inclusion of the posterior corneal surface and corneal thickness. Aim of the study was to analyse the effect of the posterior astigmatism on the surgical induced astigmatism (SIA) of the TCP after cataract surgery

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Clinic Pallas, Zurich, Switzerland

Methods:

41 eyes of 30 patients (70.3 ± 8.1 years) after uneventful cataract surgery, through a 2.4mm clear corneal temporal incision, were measured preoperatively and one month postoperatively with Scheimpflugcamera (Pentacam, Oculus). Posterior astigmatism and TCP were analysed and SIA was calculated with vector analysis

Results:

SIA-TCP was 0.48 ± 0.3 dpt and showed a borderline statistical non significant difference between eyes with the rule (WTR) 0.39 ± 0.29 dpt and against the rule (ATR) astigmatism 0.57 ± 0.39 dpt (p = 0.054). Posterior Astigmatism correlated statistically not significantly with SIA-TCP in WTR (p = 0.96) and significantly in ATR group (p = 0.028)

Conclusions:

Corneal posterior surface und posterior astigmatism may have an influence on SIA-TCP after cataract surgery, especially in eyes with ATR astigmatism FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
