Outcomes of surgery for posterior polar cataract using torsional ultrasound

Abstract Details
Purpose:
The aim of this study is to report outcomes of surgery for posterior polar cataract using torsional ultrasound.
Setting:
Kagıthane State Hospital ,Department of Ophthalmology,Istanbul, Turkey
Methods:
Medical records of 35 eyes of 30 consecutive patients with posterior polar cataract (PPC) who had cataract surgery using the torsional phacoemulsification (PE) were evaluated retrospectively. The surgical procedure used, PE parameters, intraoperative complications, and postoperative visual outcome were recorded.
Results:
Of the 35 eyes, 34 (97.1%) had small to medium posterior polar opacity. One eye had large opacity. All surgeries were performed using the torsional handpiece. Posterior capsule rupture (PCR) occurred in 6 (17.1%) eyes. The mean visual acuity improved significantly after surgery (p<0.001). The postoperative visual acuity was worse than 20/20 in 3eyes. The cause of the low acuity was amblyopia.
Conclusions:
Successful surgical results and good visual outcome can be achieved with PE using the torsional handpiece. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
