The effect of corneal wound size on surgical outcomes of phacoemulsification surgery

Purpose:
to compare phacoemulsification parameters and surgically induced astigmatism through different corneal wound size
Setting:
Haseki Education and Research Hospital.Turkey
Methods:
retrospective study. we evaluated 80 eyes of 72 patients that had cataract surgery performed through temporal clear corneal incisions between february-june 2013. we divided them into two groups (2,4 mm and 2,8 mm) keratometry were performed preoperatively, at month 1 and 3. surgically induced astigmatism was calculated by means of vector analysis. phaco time, cumulative dissipated energy and total fluid used were recorded. student's t test and mann whitney u test were used for statistical analysis
Results:
there were no statistically difference in intraoculer parameters. phaco time, cumulative dissipated energy and total fluid used were comparable between two groups.(respectively p>0,450 ,p>0,290 ,p>0,137) surgically induced astigmatism in the 2,4 mm group was less than 2,8 mm group at month 1 and 3. (month1: 0,43 D at 2,4mm, 0,67D at 2,8mm, p>0,02) (month3:0,26D at 2,4mm, 0,40D at 2,8mm, p>0,01)
Conclusions:
we conclude that smaller incisions may result in less surgically induced astigmatism. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
