Abstract Details

Purpose:

To asses long-term clinical results of implantation acrylic IOL made by photopolymerization technology in group of patients older 60 y.o.

Setting:

Multidisciplinary Science and Technology Complex Eye Microsurgery named after Academician S. N. Fyodorov, Federal State Institution, Novosibirsk Branch, Russia

Methods:

The study included 442 eyes of patients after phacoemulsification and implantation of hydrophobic acrylic lens - MIOL-2. Replication of the MIOL-2 was performed by frontier photopolymerization of liquid oligoethermetacrylate in a mould in one stage. This modern technology provides high surface smoothness of the lenses. A high-quality cross-linked polymer of the lens (density - 1,12 g/cm3 and the refraction index - 1,5) has good biocompatibility. MIOL-2 design has square edge and open gaptic. The mean age of the patients at the time of cataract surgery was 75,6±6,4 years. Exclusion criteria: previous intraocular surgery or ocular trauma, glaucoma, AMD, PDR, intraocular complication like posterior capsular tear. The visual outcomes, the level of IOP, the development of PCO and the frequency of Nd-YAG capsulotomy were assessed over a mean period of 1,7± 0,57 years.

Results:

Pre-op distant BCVA was 0,26±3,14 lines (LogMar 0,58±0,31). The mean IOP before/after cataract surgery was 18,5±6,6 and 16,8±3,7 mm Hg accordingly. After cataract surgery, distant UCVA and BCVA in eyes without PCO ( 406 eyes) were 0,43±2,81 lines (LogMar 0,37±0,28) and 0,71±1,17 lines (LogMar 0,15±0,12) accordingly. The PCO was observed in 36 eyes (8,14%). The distant UCVA and BCVA in eyes with PCO were 0,34±3,48 lines (LogMar 0,46±0,35) and 0,48±3,54 lines (LogMar 0,32±0,35) accordingly. The standard Nd-YAG capsulotomy was performed in all cases of PCO. After Nd-YAG capsulotomy the VA has grown in all treated eyes and was 0,71±1,06 (LogMar 0,15± 0,11).

Conclusions:

Implantation of hydrophobic acrylic lens MIOL-2 provides high visual function in eyes of patients older 60 y.o. The frequency of PCO and Nd-YAG capsulotomy in eyes with MIOL-2 is comparable to that when using similar hydrophobic acrylic lenses. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
