Abstract Details
Purpose:
To study visual and optical outcomes after toric and multifocal intraocular lens implantation
Setting:
Ophthalmology Clinic, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Tg-Mures, Romania
Methods:
We conducted a 1 year retrospective study, which included 30 eyes that underwent cartaract surgery by phacoemulsification method. Biometry was performed by contact and immersion method. On-line calculation formulas were used to establish final refraction of the artificial lens. Interventions were made by one surgeon, with the same surgical technique.
Results:
16 eyes were implanted with Acry Sof IQ Toric, 6 eyes with Acry Sof IQ ReSTOR Toric and 6 eyes with Acry Sof IQ ReSTOR. Postoperatively, age-related macular degeneration was noticed in 2 cases. Toric lens implantation was abandoned because of the possibility of fibrosis with rhexis deformation and a non-circular bag in 1 eye with sequelae of uveitis; in 1 case we noticed a wrong positioning of the Toric lens implant, something that could be resolved even at 5 weeks after cataract surgery. Patients with ReSTOR and ReSTOR Toric needed a period of adjustment variable subjectively from 1 day to 1 month. Best visual acuity was achieved however after the operation of the congener eye. None of the patients requested glasses for intermediate distance. One patient complained of halos around light sources.
Conclusions:
We strongly believe that young patients with cataract should be informed about the existence of Premium intraocular lens because these devices are currently the best solution for coexisting cataract and refractive error. Patient selections, properly performed biometry along with a good knowledge of surgical technique are the keys to success. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
