Comparison of a new generation segmental bi-focal refractive multifocal intraocular lens and diffractive multifocal intraocular lens

Purpose:

To compare the clinical outcomes after cataract surgery in patients implanted with a new generation segmental bi-focal refractive aspheric multifocal intraocular lens(IOL) and a diffractive aspheric multifocal IOL.

Setting:

Retrospective case series, Tane Memorial Eye Hospital, Osaka, Japan

Methods:

Two hundred seven eyes from 144 patients(mean age:61.4±11 years) with cataract were included. They were divided into 3groups:56 eyes(group L) was implanted with segmental bi-focal refractive aspheric multifocal IOL(Lentis MplusⓇ:LS313MF30, Oculentis GmbH); 131 eyes (group Z) was implanted with diffractive aspheric multifocal IOL (TecnisⓇ MultiZMZ00/ZMBOO, AMO); 20 eyes(group S) was implanted with diffractive apodized multifocal IOL (ReSTORⓇ +3D, Alcon). Uncorrected visual acuity at several distances(0.33m, 0.5m, 1m, 3m, and 5m), refractive error at distance, and contrast sensitivity was examined postoperatively.

Results:

Uncorrected distance visual acuity at 3m and 5m was not significantly different among 3 groups. L group had significantly better uncorrected intermediate visual acuity than Z group at 0.5m and 1m. Uncorrected near visual acuity at 0.33m was significantly better in Z group and L group, followed by S group. The mean uncorrected visual acuity at 0.33m was 0.1 logMAR in L group (Lentis Mplus IOL with a near addition +3.0D). Regression analysis showed that spherical equivalent and astigmatism affects uncorrected visual acuity in L group less than the other 2 groups. Contrast sensitivity was not significantly different among 3 groups.

Conclusions:

New generation segmental bi-focal refractive aspheric multifocal IOL is less affected by postoperative refractive error. This refractive IOL performs good vision not in distance and intermediate point but in near point and shows deeper focus depth. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
