Long-term stability of refraction following uneventful phacoemulsification

Purpose:

A retrospective study to determine long term refractive stability following uneventful phacoemulsification.

Methods:

Inclusion criteria were uneventful phacoemulsification by a single surgeon and completion of over 6 months follow up. All patients were implanted with a single piece hydrophobic intraocular lens. The exclusion criteria were any intraoperative or post operative complications and BCDVA 6/18 or worse at any follow up. BCDVA, spherical equivalent of the refractive error at the two visits (1week postoperative and more than 6months) and the change in spherical equivalent between these two visits were documented.

Results:

Ninety-seven eyes of 83 patients (male:female=38:45, age=40-80 years, median age 63 years) were included. Change in spherical equivalent was less than or equal to 0.50 D in 90 eyes (92.8%) and 7 eyes (7.2%) had a change of more than 0.50 D.

Conclusions:

In this study we have found a refractive stability within 0.50 D, over 6 months post-operatively, in almost 93% of our patients. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
