Evaluation of visual and refractive results after bilateral implantation of a new trifocal intraocular lens

Abstract Details



Purpose:

The purpose of this prospective interventional study is to evaluate the visual and refractive results of bilateral implantation of trifocal intraocular lens AT LISA tri 839 MP in patients with cataract surgery.

Setting:

Oftaprof Clinic, Iasi, Romania

Methods:

This study comprised a prospective series of 20 patients who underwent bilateral cataract surgery and trifocal diffractive IOL implantation. The inclusion criteria were: age over 45 years, corneal astigmatism lower than 1.0 diopter and no other ocular disease. Biometric measurements and IOL power calculations were performed with the IOLMaster (Carl Zeiss Meditec) and ultrasonic immersion biometry( Ocuscan, Alcon).The follow-up was at least 6 months.The main outcome measures were monocular and binocular uncorrected distance (UDVA) and corrected distance (CDVA), intermediate, and near visual acuities(logMAR) and manifest refraction. Statistical analysis was performed with SPSS Statistics 19.0.

Results:

The study comprised 40 eyes of 20 patients (mean age 52.5years ± 6.8 [SD]; range 46 to 66 years) whom underwent uncomplicated cataract surgery by phacoemulsificaton. Mean monocular uncorrected visual acuity (VA) (± standard deviation [SD]) was 0.12±0.20,0.08±0.42, and 0.18±0.17 for 6 m, 80 cm, and 40 cm respectively. Mean monocular best distance corrected VA (±SD) was 0.09±0.11, 0.06±0.22, 0.12±0.16 for 6 m, 80 cm, and 40 cm respectively. Mean binocular uncorrected VA (±SD) was 0.06±0.16, 0.02±0.23 and 0.16±0.14 for 6 m, 80 cm and 40 cm respectively. Binocular best distance corrected VA was 0.02±0.20, 0.00±0.20and 0.04±0.11 for the mentioned distances. There was significant improvement in UDVA, uncorrected intermediate visual acuity, uncorrected near visual acuity, CDVA, and distance-corrected intermediate and near visual acuity. The postoperative refractive status was within the range of +0.75 to −0.75 diopter.

Conclusions:

The trifocal IOL provided good near, intermediate, and distance vision in patients with cataract surgery. Doing cataract surgery with phacoemulsification and implanting the AT LISA tri 839 MP is a safe and reliable procedure. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
