Abstract Details
Purpose:
15-22% of the population's astigmatism is higer than 1,5 D. Recently, due to better phacoemulsification techniques, several toric intraocular lenses (IOLs) in hydrophobic, hydrophilic and sIlicon materials have been implanted. Recently a new collamer toric IOL (Staar Surgical) has been introduced. We evaluated the rotational stability of the NanoFlex toric Collamer Single Piece IOL using a photographic software (Protractor).
Setting:
Department of Surgical Sciences, Eye Clinic University of Turin, Turin, Italy
Methods:
The nanoFLEX&trade toric IOL (STAAR) has been implanted in 16 consecutive eyes of 16 patients with a topographically determined (Scheimpflug camera) regular astigmatism higher than 1 D. All IOL implantations were performed by a single surgeon (AF) with a 2.2 mm incision placed at 11 o' clock. Refraction and best corrected (BCVA) visual acuity were measured at 1 day, 1 week and 1 month postoperatively. At each visit, the patients' anterior segment was photographed using a Haag-Streit system in retro-illumination. Diffuse light was used to identify the course of conjunctival vessels in order to correctly align subsequent photographs. The axis of the IOL identified by 6 positioning marks was evaluated using the Protractor system.
Results:
Mean refractive astigmatism decreased from 2,13±0,2 D to 0,88±0,4 D (p<0,01) at 1 month. BCVA preoperatively was 0,4 ± 1,1 Snellen lines and 0,8 ± 2,4 (p<0,01) at 1 month. The mean axis rotation was 0,72± 0,85 degrees (range 0,1-2,5) and 0,48± 0,32 degrees (range 0,1-0,8) at 7 days and 1 month postoperatively (p=0,4). (T -student, SPSS 22.0)
Conclusions:
Rotational stability of toric IOL has been reported to be 2,5 to 4 degrees in the early post-operative period for acrylic (hydrophylic and hydrophobic) and silicon IOL. The rotational stability of the collagen toric IOL compares favorably well with currently available toric IOLs. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
