Visual function after bilateral implantation of multifocal IOLs: Finevision vs ReSTOR

Purpose:
To prospectively evaluate postoperative visual and refractive parameters in a series of subjects bilaterally implanted with the Finevision (micro F) trifocal IOL versus those bilaterally implanted with the AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® +3.
Setting:
Single center
Methods:
28 subjects (56 eyes) with cataract and ≤ 1.00D of corneal astigmatism were randomized to receive bilateral implantation of either Finevision (micro F) trifocal IOLs or AcrySof IQ ReSTOR +3.00 add IOLs. Main outcomes measures were the mean binocular uncorrected distance (UDVA), intermediate (UIVA) and near (UNVA) visual acuity under photopic and mesopic conditions, refractive outcomes, binocular defocus curve, contrast sensitivity and patient satisfaction.
Results:
At 6 months postoperative, the mean binocular UDVA, UIVA and UNVA under photopic conditions with the ReSTOR +3 IOL (n= 13) were 0.00 ± 0.09, 0.28±0.08 and 0.12±0.08 logMAR respectively, and with the Finevision IOL (n=15) -0.01 ±0.11, 0.32±0.15 and 0.15±0.13 logMAR respectively(P>0.05). The Finevision group showed a more continuous defocus curve, as well as significantly better results at -1.0 D of defocus, both under photopic (p<0.001) and mesopic conditions (p<0.001). Complete spectacle independence were reported by 80% subjects in the FineVision group and 75% of subjects in the ReSTOR group. There were no significant difference between the two groups in refractive outcomes, contrast sensitivity and patient satisfaction.
Conclusions:
This prospective RCT proved non inferiority, in visual outcomes, of the FineVision trifocal IOL compared to the ReSTOR bifocal IOL, in patients operated for cataract. Patients with Finevision IOL reported more spectacle independency than patients with Acrysof IOL.
