Abstract Details

Purpose:

To visually rehabilitate aphakic patients due to severe trauma with concomitant severe corneal irregularity

Setting:

Farabi Eye Hospital, Contact lens clinic; March 2012 - January 2014

Methods:

Interventional case series; Aphakic patients with severe corneal and intra ocular injuries which made either IOL implantation or conventional corneal RGP fitting impossible were fitted with mini scleral contact lenses and visual results, comfort and handling issues were evaluated.

Results:

Eight patients with history of traumatic corneal laceration and cataract, were considered for Mini Scleral contact lens fitting. Two or three trial was performed, in average, on the patients in one session. Uncorrected visual acuity of cases were ≤ 5/100. Power of miniscleral lenses ranged from +4.0 to + 16.0. Average final BCVA with these lenses was 8.87/10 (range from 4/10 to 11/10). All patients were comfortable with handling these lenses.

Conclusions:

Mini scleral contact lenses can safely and effectively correct aphakic patients with severe ocular injuries and concomitant severe corneal irregularity. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
