Abstract Details

Purpose:

To determine the visual outcome and surgical complications in a consecutive case series of monocular patients with cataracts who underwent phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantion PE+IOL, this study carried out.

Setting:

Matini Hospital, Amirkabir ave. Kashan, Iran

Methods:

In this perspective study 168 monocular patients from March 2006 to April 2011, in Matini hospital of Kashan(Iran), who underwent PE+IOL, were reviewed. Patients were considered monocular if snellian BCVA in their fallow eye (the eye not having surgery) was worse than 20/200. Patients classified into two groups: group І, The fellow eye vision was no light perception (NLP) and in group II, the fellow eye vision was light perception (LP) to <20/200. Records were demographic information, anesthesia method, preoperative and 3 months postoperative BCVA, intraop. and postop. complications, cause of decreased vision in fellow eye (unoperated eye), ocular co morbidities ,intraoperative or postoperative other surgeries. Recorded information analyzed with SPSS soft ware.

Results:

Mean age of patients was 52±13 years (age range 38-92 years). Fifty eight percent of patients were female. There was no intraoperative complication in both groups. The most common cause of decreased vision in group I were diabetic retinopathy (32.4%) and trauma (31%) but in group II were DR (41.7%) and Age Related Macular Degeneration (18.6%). Three month after operation visual acuity was ≥20/40 in 58% and 42% of operated eyes in group I and II respectively.

Conclusions:

Phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation in monocular patients is safe and leads to improvement of visual acuity, expect in cases with ocular co morbidities. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
