Abstract Details

Purpose:

To determine if there is a difference in the metrics recorded during the removal of heminuclei using a new phacoemulsifier and its predecessor

Setting:

A district general hospital eye department

Methods:

During 30 consecutive phacoemulsification operations the lens nucleus was split in 2. Each half was removed using either the new machine or its predecessor on any individual eye. This was to provide a direct comparison of machine performance.. The choice of machine was randomised to be used first. The machine settings were as used on the previous machine except that the new machine with an active irrigation delivery was set to an intraocular pressure of 50mmHg and irrigation factor of 1.6. A 2.2mm incision was used for all eyes The fluid use, energy usage, time in foot position 3 were amongst a range of metrics recorded for each heminucleus. A subjective assessment of chamber stability for each heminucleus removal was also made.

Results:

The study is still ongoing but preliminary results suggest improved performance in terms of fluid use, energy dissipation and time in foot position 3.Chamber stability was improved for the new machine even though the equivalent bottle height was 68cm compared with 110cm for the older machine

Conclusions:

The active fluidics system on the new machine offers more efficient nuclear removal with more stable chambers FINANCIAL INTEREST: One of more of the authors... receives consulting fees, retainer, or contract payments from a company producing, developing or supplying the product or procedure presented
