Intraocular lens (IOL) implant power calculation done with intraoperative use of ORA did not provide useful additional information to improve the post-op refractive results in initial 30 cases of IOL calculations based on A-scan immersion biometry

Abstract Details



Purpose:

To determine if ORA , an intra-operative aberrometry , a newer technology recommended for intra-operative confirmation of IOL power, adds useful information in eyes with IOL calculations performed based on water immersion biometry in eyes with no previous refractive surgery.

Setting:

A clinical private practice setting. A retrospective study.

Methods:

30 consecutive cases of cataracts who had pre-operative IOL calculation with immersion biometry underwent inta-operative ORA to assess accuracy of IOL calculations in eyes without refractive surgery.

Results:

28 of 30 eyes the IOL were within 0.25 diopters. In 2 cases ORA predicted an under correction of 1d and 2d . The IOL was adjusted by only by 0.5d in the 1d eye and this resulted in an overcorrection. The 2d patient both ORA and immersion gave same results. Since this was the 2nd eye, the IOL power was adjusted based on the refractive results in the first eye performed with water immersion but without ORA. This eye was close to emmetropia.

Conclusions:

In this short initial series ,ORA and water immersion biometry were similar in their post op predictive refractive results in cataract surgery in eyes with no previous refractive surgery. ORA added more time and expense to the cataract procedure. Larger group of eyes performed with both techniques would be needed to confirm our conclusions. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
