Intraoperative wavefront aberrometry: a new technology to optimize the refractive outcome in patients with premium intraocular lenses

Purpose:

Evaluation of the accuracy and reliability of a new intraoperative wavefront aberrometry concerning the improvement of intraocular lenses (IOL) power selection and ascertain the axis for toric IOL positioning in patients with premium IOL.

Setting:

University Hospital Heidelberg, Department of ophthalmology

Methods:

A new technology of intraoperative wavefront aberrometry enables measurements of the sphere, cylinder, and axis during surgery in phakic, aphakic, and pseudophakic eyes. Moreover the evaluation of rotational accuracy during toric intraocular lens alignment can be achieved with this device. In this study the precision and accuracy of the intraoperative measurements with the wavefront aberrometry was compared with the preoperative mark of axis. The conformity of the preoperatively manual marked axis with the intraoperative measured axis positioning of the aphakic eye was evaluated.

Results:

The intraoperative measurements with the wavefront aberrometry showed a good correlation between preoperative and postoperative target refraction.

Conclusions:

Intraoperative wavefront aberrometry enables real-time refractive analysis of the sphere, cylinder, and axis during surgery and is particularly suitable to precise rotational placement of toric IOLs.
