IOLotomy using a femtosecond laser

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To determine the energy requirements for cutting hydrophobic and hydrophillic acrylic artificial lens using a femtosecond laser. To collect the generated gas and particulate product for further analysis.
Setting:
Australia
Methods:
Clinical invitro study. We performed IOlotomy using a LenSx laser in the clinic. The amount of energy needed to transect a lens was determined. The gas generated was collected for liquid gas chromatography and nephlometry
Results:
Both hydrophobic acrylic and hydrophilic acrylic lenses could be transected using the femtosecond laser. The nephlometry did not detect significant increase in particulate matter compared to the background. Liquid gas chromatography of hydrophobic lenses detected 90% of the gas to be ethylphenyl esters, while the hydrophilic lenses produced ethoxymethy methacrylate
Conclusions:
Femotosecond lasers can be used to cut artificial lenses. These may allow easier explantation of lenses. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
