Evaluation of a digital surgical navigation system for intraoperative use during anterior segment ophthalmic surgery

Purpose:

The need for innovative technologies is continuous, especially in the field of ophthalmology. This study reports on early experience and results with a surgical navigation system for intraoperative use during anterior segment ophthalmic surgery.

Setting:

Hospital and Private Practice Clinics

Methods:

The Cirle Surgical Navigation System (SNS) was used in the surgical planning and guidance for cataract surgery. Surgeon specific parameters were entered into the system, and the SNS relayed intraoperative guidance to the surgeon during cataract extraction surgery. Qualitative and quantitative data was gathered on toric IOL alignment, placement on corneal incisions and capsulorhexis.

Results:

The SNS improved accuracy of toric IOL alignment, placement of corneal primary and secondary incisions, arcuate incisions, and capsulorhexis compared with a control group. Real time phacoemulsification data was streamed to surgeon intraoperatively. Detailed results will be presented at the meeting. Results were found from explorations with the surgical navigation system on donor eyes by ophthalmic surgeons and staff.

Conclusions:

Surgical navigation systems improve the quality of ophthalmic surgery by improving the accuracy of refractive outcomes. Specifically, in the case of toric intraocular lens placement, surgical guidance systems can improve the accuracy of alignment of the IOL to the surgical axis of interest.
