Pseudophakic cystoid macular edema after uneventful cataract surgery

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To present the management of a patient who developed cystoid macular edema after uneventful phacoemulsification surgery.

Setting:

1st Department of Ophthalmology, AHEPA University General Hospital, Thessaloniki, Greece

Methods:

A 70 year old male with a 2+ nuclear cataract underwent phacoemulsification surgery. His medical history was positive for diabetes mellitus under good control and during his preoperative consultation no signs of diabetic retinopathy were present. 2 months postoperatively the patient complained about a reduction in visual acuity and micropsia. Cystoid macular edema was observed fundoscopically and confirmed with OCT. The patient was instructed to use nepafenac drops (1mg/ml) three times a day and was evaluated again in 1 month.

Results:

During his evaluation his visual acuity and OCT exam parameters were both improved. No side-effects to the treatment were observed.

Conclusions:

Treatment of pseudophakic cystoid macular edema after uneventful cataract surgery with nepafenac drops is safe and effective. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
