Tear osmolarity and cataract surgery

Purpose:

: To compare the preoperative, one month and three months post-op tear osmolarity (TO) values

Setting:

Hospital Universitario Principe de Asturias. Alcalá de Henres, Madrid. Spain.

Methods:

This prospective study analyzed the tear osmolarity using the Tearlab system before and after unilateral cataract surgery. Ocular symptoms were also analyzed using the ocular surface disease index (OSDI) test. Both tear osmolarity (TO) and OSDI score were evaluated before (baseline) and 1 and 3 months after surgery.

Results:

47 patients entered the study. TO was 305.8 mosm , 305.4 mosm, and 304.9 mosm at baseline, 1 and three months post op (p>0.05). OSDI score was 27.9, 14.4 and 11.4 at the same time points (p=0.0001). Patients with TO higher than 312 mosm at baseline (hyperosmolars) had worse OSDI scores three months after surgery, than patients with lower TO values (p=0.04).

Conclusions:

Tear osmolarity does not change after cataract surgery. Baseline osmolarity may help to predict which patients are more likely to have more severe ocular surface discomfort after cataract surgery FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
