Visual outcome and postoperative complications following pediatric cataract surgery in tertiary eye care center

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the visual outcome and the postoperative complications following pediatric cataract surgery in tertiary eye care centre.

Setting:

Narayana Nethralaya, a tertiary eye care center in Bangalore, India

Methods:

Retrospective analysis of 68 eyes in 41 children who underwent cataract surgery between May 2007 and October 2011 were reviewed. Patients' demographics, cataract type and surgical intervention, pre operative and postoperative visual acuities, and follow-up clinical examinations were recorded.

Results:

Sixty-eight eyes of 41 patients, 16 females and 25 males, underwent cataract extraction. Of the 38 eyes that underwent lens aspiration (LA) with primary posterior capsulotomy(PPC) with anterior vitrectomy(AV) with intraocular lens implantation(IOL), 29 eyes underwent LA+PPC+AV, while LA+IOL implantation was done in 1 case. Twenty-seven patients had bilateral while 14 patients had unilateral cataract. Forty-three eyes (55.88%) had congenital, 21 (30.88%) developmental, 2 traumatic and 2 steroid induced cataract. Mean follow up period was 15.84 months. Most common postoperative complication was anterior chamber reaction in immediate postoperative period (8 eyes, 11.76%) and glaucoma in longterm follow up (3 eyes,4.41%).Visual improvement was noted in 47 of 53 eyes (88.68%) were visual acuity was noted.

Conclusions:

With recent advances in microsurgery, pediatric cataract surgery is associated with good visual outcome and less postoperative complications. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
