Multifocal IOL in children: a SAFIR multicentric study

Purpose:

In a retrospective multicentric study, we describe the anatomical and functional results of cataract in chidren operated on with multifocal intraocular lenses.

Setting:

SAFIR Paris France

Methods:

51 eyes of 40 children were operated on for unilateral and bilateral cataract with multifocal IOL (Restor SN 60 AD3-AD1, Tecnis ZMA00, AMO NXG1, AcrilisaToric). Patient age ranged from 9 months to 15 years. The surgical techniques used were traditional phako and phako with posterior capsulorhexis and anterior central vitrectomy associated before 5 years. Pre and postoperative anatomical and functional outcomes were compared. The mean follow up was 21,56 months.

Results:

These results concerned the eyes (n=41) with one year or more followup. With a mean preoperative distance BCVA of 0.66 Log Mar the mean distance UCVA was 0.47 Log Mar and distance BCVA was 0.28 Log Mar. The mean near postoperative uncorrected visual acuity was 0,47 Log Mar and 0,31 Log Mar for near BCVA. Independence with the wearing of glasses was obtained in 43,5% of cases. Pre and Postoperative strabismus were unchanged and binocular vision increased post operatively at 36,6 % (24,4% preoperatively). Secondary posterior capsular opacification were noted in 43,5 % of cases and treated by YAG laser at a mean of 12,2 months postoperativey. We didn't noted significant differences in these results between multifocal IOL.

Conclusions:

In this retrospective SAFIR multicentic study, the surgery of the cataract in chidren with multifocal IOL shows encouraging anatomical results and in independance glasses wearing. Further followup with more cases will be needed to determine long-term outcome. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
