Clinical outcomes and stability of apodized diffractive multifocal intraocular lens implantation in pediatric cataract surgery

Abstract Details



Purpose:

To evaluate the clinical outcomes and stability of apodized diffractive multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) in children

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Catholic University of Daegu, Daegu, Korea

Methods:

16 eyes from 12 children between 4 and 10 years of age with cataract had phacoaspiration accompanied by posterior capsulorhexis and anterior vitrectomy. Apodized diffractive multifocal IOLs (AcrySof Restor SN60D3) were implanted in the bag. Uncorrected distance (UCDVA), corrected distance (CDVA), and uncorrected near (UCNVA) visual acuities, subjective symptoms such as glare and halos, the degree of IOL decentration and posterior capsular opacification (PCO) were evaluated over 24 months.

Results:

At 24 months, UCDVA and CDVA were improved in 12 eyes. UCDVA better than 20/32 was achieved in 10 eyes, 20/50 in 2 eyes, and 20/63 in 4 eyes. CDVA better than 20/32 was achieved in 12 eyes, and in 4 eyes CDVA was less than 20/63 because of deprivation amblyopia. UCNVA better than J2 in 12 eyes, less than J3 was in 4 eyes. None of the 16 patients complained about the subjective symptoms such as glare and halos. No significant IOL decentration and development of PCO were observed in any patient.

Conclusions:

In the bag implantation of an apodized multifocal IOL after cataract extraction accompanied by posterior capsulorhexis and anterior vitrectomy had a satisfactory clinical results without significant IOL decentration with PCO development in children FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
