Evaluation of Artisan aphakic intraocular lens in cases of paediatric aphakia with insufficient capsular support

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the postoperative visual acuity and note the complications following artisan intraocular lens (IOL) implantation

Setting:

Children Hospital Cairo University, Research Institute of Ophthalmology

Methods:

Prospective study enrolling 25 eyes of 18 aphakic pediatric patients with insufficient capsular support. They were all implanted with Artisan aphakic IOL which is fixated to the anterior surface of the iris

Results:

Eighteen eyes were primarily implanted with iris claw lens and 7 eyes were secondarily implanted. There was significant improvement of the postoperative best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) (0.5) from preoperative BCVA (0.17). The endothelial cell count (ECC) showed significant decrease within the first postoperative month (3081.64) from preoperatively (3574.36) which showed no further decrease within the first postoperative year. The intraocular pressure showed no significant change throughout the followup period,

Conclusions:

The iris fixated aphakic claw lens is a safe option for correction of cases of pediatric aphakia with insufficient capsular support. It does not show the complications induced by the angle supported anterior chamber IOLs or the posterior chamber scleral fixated IOls FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
