Congenital cataract: intraocular lens centration after bag-in-the-lens implantation

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To examine the safety, feasibility and anatomical outcome of bag-in-the-lens implantation technique in children.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, 'Santa Maria Delle Croci' Hospital, Ravenna, Italy

Methods:

One case of bilateral congenital cataract and one case of monocular congenital cataract are presented. After creating anterior continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis using the ring calliper and performing routine phacoemulsification we made posterior, identical capsulorhexis. We continued with the bag-in-the-lens IOL implantation. The aim was to stretch the capsules while inserting the lens to promote tight fixation of the lens by both capsules to block lens epithelial cells migration.

Results:

One week, one month and six months post-op controls were made. The IOL optic remained completely captured and there was no axis opacification at the final follow-up.

Conclusions:

The bag-in-the-lens implantation technique is an excellent option if we want to achieve an anatomical outcome and to prevent anterior and posterior capsule opacification in case of congenital cataract. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
