Effect of unilateral paediatric cataract surgery on ocular growth and corneal flattening

Purpose:
To study the effect of paediatric cataract surgery on ocular growth and corneal flattening
Setting:
Hospital Universitario La Fe, Valencia-Spain
Methods:
We conducted a cross-sectional study of 59 eyes operated for unilateral paediatric cataract with a median age at the time of diagnosis of 17 months (interquartile range, 5-39 months), and a median age at the time of cataract surgery of 28 months (interquartile range, 8-52 months), and a mean follow-up between cataract surgery and assessments of 149.7 +/- 69.9 months (range, 30-319 months). Axial length and corneal curvature were measured both in the operated and non-operated eyes, these values are compared with each other. Also we performed a subanalysis dividing the sample according to the visual acuity (VA) into two groups: patients with deep amblyopia (VA <0.1), and patients without deep amblyopia (VA≥ 0.1), and another subanalysis dividing the sample according to intervention age into three groups: intervention with age <12 months, between 12-30 months, and > 30 months.
Results:
Regarding axial length (P-Value= 0,327, t-student test) and corneal curvature (P-value = 0.078, t-student test), indicating no statistically significant differences for axial length growth or corneal flattening between operated and unoperated eyes, regarding 2 subanalysis, we find a statistically significant difference relative to the axial length only in the no deep amblyopia group (p -value 0.007, t-student test) with a minor axial length in the operated eyes compared to unoperated eyes.
Conclusions:
No significant retardation or acceleration of axial growth, and no significant difference in corneal flattening in the operated eyes respect to non-operated eyes after unilateral paediatric cataract surgery. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
