Abstract Details

Purpose:

to evaluate the effect of preoperative anxiety on intraoperative pain and patient's cooperation in patients undergoing cataract surgery under topical anaesthesia.

Setting:

Kayseri Training and Research Hospital Kayseri- Turkey

Methods:

This study included 150 patients. The state and trait anxiety in cataract surgery was measured by State- Trait Anxiety Inventory scale. The pain intensity in the immediate postoperative period was measured by The visual analog scale (VAS).In order to monitor the patient's behavior during cataract surgery was used by Patient Cooperation Scale. Phacoemulsification was performed with quick chop technique using Alcon OZiL IP system. Spearman correlation analysis was used to assess the relationship between anxiety scores and introperative pain or patient's cooperation scores. In addition to, cataract firmness, axial length, total surgical time were assessed. P<0.05 was considered statistically significant.

Results:

In the present study, 150 eyes from 150 patients were evaluated. Mean age was 69.7±9.4 years (range: 46—92 years), and 73 men and 77 women were included. When the relationship among preoperative anxiety scores , intraoperative pain scores and patients' cooperation scores were evaluated, there were significant correlations between preoperative anxiety scores and intraoperative pain scores (r=0.784; P<0.0001) and patients' cooperation scores (r=0.776; P<0.0001).

Conclusions:

The detection of preoperative anxiety scores of patients undergoing cataract surgery are critical for prediction of intraoperative pain and patient's cooperation especially during cataract surgery under topical anaesthesia. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
