Transitory corneal edema with increased intraocular pressure in patients after LASIK

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To reveal the role of increased intraocular pressure in stromal corneal edema in patients after LASIK

Setting:

Ufa Eye Research Institute

Methods:

6 patients (12 eyes) with high grade myopia from -6.0 to -8.0D were under observation. The age ranged from 19 to 40 years (on average 29±0.5 years), the corneal thickness averaged at 540±25 μm, the intraocular pressure 17±3 mm Hg. All patients underwent a personalized SuperLASIK method using an automatic microkeratome (Zyoptix, Tehnolas), corneal flap - 120 μm, excimer laser correction of the system Technolas 217Z100P (Germany). Follow-up of period - 3 months

Results:

1st day postop VA of both eyes is 1.0, IOP 12±2 mm.Hg. CT of the is 420±17 μm. The corneal edema was detected in 8 eyes in 1 week and in 4 eyes in 3 weeks, with increasing of CT up to 560±37 μm, reducing of VA (0.25±0.15), increased IOP (35±4 mm.Hg), edema of the corneal stroma. Cancellation of the steroids and topical antihypertensive drops reduced IOP to 13±3 mm.Hg, decreased CT to 424 ± 16 μm, increased VA to 1.0, corneal edema resorbed

Conclusions:

The appearance of transient corneal edema with increased IOP occurs within 1-3 weeks after surgery and process resolution can be achieved after cancellation of the steroids and admitting antihypertensive drugs
