Purpose:
To evaluate the efficacy and safety of monocular implantation of KAMRA in prebyopia correction
Setting:
Thind Eye Hospital, Jalandhar, India
Methods:
A retrospective analysis of records of patients who underwent, either monocular pocket emmetropic KAMRA( PEK) implant alone or combined femtosecond LASIK & KAMRA implant (CLK) was done regarding demographic data, preoperative and postoperative uncorrected(UDVA) and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) and uncorrected (UNVA) corrected near visual acuity (CNVA). Any operative and postoperative complications were recorded. The intracorneal implantation was done in nondominant eye after fashioning a pocket using femtosecond laser.
Results:
The study evaluated records of 123 patients (M:F-56:67)( age range- 45-65 years). Majority of patients were hyperopic presbyopes (64.2%). 92 patients underwent CLK while 31 underwent PEK implant. At last follow up of minimum two years, 91.8% patients had UNVA > or = of 20/40. Postoperative UDVA of 20/20 was present in 85.36% of eyes with KAMRA, while binocular UDVA of 20/20 was achieved in 98.3% of cases. Only 1 patient lost >2 lines of UDVA in eye with implant. The implant required recentration in two cases while it was explanted in one case, without any sequlae.
Conclusions:
KAMRA implant is safe, reversible and effective procedure for presbyopia correction. Patient selection and centration of implant is crucial for success of surgery.
