Abstract Details

Purpose:

To determine the usefulness of measurement of retinal ganglion cells thickness in the diagnosis and management of congenital retinal dystrophies in children.

Setting:

Department of Pediatric Ophthalmology School of Medicine Medical University of Silesia in Katowice

Methods:

We examined 25 children (50 eyes) with genetically conditioned retinal dystrophies:6 patients with stargardt’s disease,10 patients with retinitis pigmentosa, 7 patients with macular dystrophy and 2 patients with best disease (study group) and 25 children (50 eyes) without any retinal pathologies (comparative group).we evaluated: age, sex, corrected distant visual acuity (cdva), corrected near visual acuity (cnva), average and minimum ganglion cells + inner plexiform layer (gcc+ipl) thickness both in the study and comparative group using the ganglion cell analysis software in the cirrus hd-oct [high-definition optical coherence tomography] instrument. Then we carried out the statistical analysis of results between the groups.

Results:

In the study group there were 10 female and 15 male patients, in the comparative group 14 female and 11 male patients. The mean age of children in the study group was 12 years 2 months , in the comparative group 13years.in the study group cdva was 0,6239, cnva 0,78, in the comparative group cdva 0,99, cnva 0,5.the average thickness of gcc+ipl layer in the study group was 62,46 um, and in the comparaive group 84,32 um, while minimum thickness of gcc+ipl layer was 45,54um and 80,28um. We found a statisticallz significant difference between measurements in both groups(p < 0,05).

Conclusions:

The application of measurement of gcc+ipl layer thickness may be a usefull diagnostic tool in the management of congenital retinal diseases in future. It may allow for limitation of invasive methods such as fluorescein angiography , which were used so far. Further investigation is needed.
