Results after 100 aspheric toric intraocular lens implantations: astigmatism correction outcomes

Abstract Details

Purpose:

The implantation of a toric intraocular lens (tIOL) after cataract surgery is the best therapeutic method in patients with high astigmatism. We aim to report the refractive predictability and stability of the procedure.

Setting:

Ophthalmology Department Hospital dos Lusíadas, Lisboa, Portugal

Methods:

Retrospective study that included patients with astigmatism who underwent phacoemulsification and implantation of an aspheric tIOL (AT Torbi 709MP®). Demographic data, pre and postoperative visual acuity (VA), astigmatism and spherical equivalent were evaluated and compared. Manual and automatic computer assisted software techniques were uses to align the cylinder axis.

Results:

Study that included 100 IOL aspheric tIOL, 60% female, mean age was 66,1±10,9 years and mean follow-up 31±13,9 months. IOL cylinder greater than 4D in 18,2% of patients [1-12D]. Mean distance VA was 0,31 ±0,26 and 0,11±0,18 pre and postoperatively. Mean preoperative astigmatism was 2,45D±0,91 and mean preoperative spherical equivalent was 4,1D± 4,1. Postoperatively mean astigmatism and spherical equivalent was 0,75D±0,5 and 0,39±0,4, respectively. VA and refraction remained stable during the follow-up period.

Conclusions:

These aspheric tIOL enable an accurate and stable astigmatism correction.
