Application of toric intraocular lenses in cataract patients after penetrating keratoplasty

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the results of toric intraocular lens (IOL) implantation at cataract surgery in patients post penetrating keratoplasty (PKP).

Setting:

University Eye Hospital “Prof. Pashev”-Sofia, Bulgaria

Methods:

Prospective clinical study of 9 patients with prior PKP and high regular astigmatism after full suture removal, underwent phacoemulsification and implantation of a single-piece acrylic toric IOL. The period for operations was 2 years with follow up 3-27 months. Patients underwent comprehensive examinations: visual acuity, manifest refraction, endothelial cells counting, corneal topography and biometry.

Results:

In all patients corneal transplant remained transparent after cataract surgery without significant endothelial cell lost. With improvement in visual acuity were 8 eyes. Only 1 patient did not gain better vision. Preoperative topographic astigmatism was 6.57 ± 2.05 diopters (D). Postoperative manifest refraction astigmatism was 2.08 ± 1.25 D. We do not observed intra and postoperative complications.

Conclusions:

Application of toric IOL during cataract surgery post PKP and full sutures removal achieved significant correction of preoperative astigmatism. This is efficient method for improvement of visual acuity in patients with high regular astigmatism post PKP.
