Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate clinical outcome after toric intraocular lens implantation. In view of the high incidence of astigmatism in general population which reflects same in cataract patients undergoing surgery astigmatism correction will definitely give better quality of vision and patient satisfaction.

Setting:

Chaitanya Eye Hospital 40-5-19/4, Tikkle road Mogalrajpuram, Vijayawada, Andhra pradesh, India.

Methods:

This prospective study enrolled eyes with cataract and astigmatism of 1.5D or greater operated between Feb 2010 to Feb2018.Pre operative evaluation done with topography, optical biometry and retinal evaluation. Phaco-emulsification was performed and various brands of toric foldable intraocular lenses were used . Data of 500 cases analysed. After one month the uncorrected distance visual acuity was 6/9 . 98 % of eyes with mean reduction in refractive cylinder was statistically significant (P<0.05) and mean intraocular lens axis rotation was 3.0 degrees interquartile range (2.0-4.0 degrees).

Results:

Our results showed that toricIOL's are effective in correcting preexisting corneal astigmatism by taking proper care in case selection and pre operative evaluation. 98% of the patients were happy with toric IOLs.

Conclusions:

In this 8yr period our incidence of toric-IOL's implantation is increasing .Results are equally good with all manufactures of toric-IOLs .Previously cost factor is a big hurdle to use toric-IOLs. With the advent of toric-IOLs at an affordable cost in India ,the number of Toric-IOLs implantation is multiplying year by year.
