Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the influnece of decentration and aperture size on the optical quality of two different trifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) using standardized optical bench testing.

Setting:

The David J. Apple International Laboratory for Ocular Pathology, Department of Ophthalmology, University of Heidelberg

Methods:

Using an optical bench set-up, two diffractive trifocal IOLs were evaluated: RayOne® Trifocal (Rayner Intraocular Lenses Ltd.) and AT LISA Tri 839MP (Carl Zeiss Meditec). Modulation transfer function (MTF) values were measured at spatial frequencies of 50lp/mm and aperture sizes of 3.0 and 4.5mm. Each IOL was measured while centered, then decentered by 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.00mm.

Results:

For both pupil sizes, the two trifocal IOLs showed comparable results, with considerable reduction of their MTF values at far, intermediate, and near distances after decentration of more than 0.50mm.

Conclusions:

Optical bench testing can help predict the optical behaviour of multifocal IOLs when they are decentered in the eye. The surgeons should take additional care to make sure the multifocal IOLs are well centered to avoid potential deterioration in the optical performance.
