Abstract Details

Purpose:

The aim of the study was to evaluate and compare the functional and morfological outcomes and patient satisfaction after the implantation of two different types of trifocal diffractive apodized IOLs: Bi-Flex 677MY (Medicontur) and FineVision (PhysIOL).

Setting:

Centre Hospitalier Jolimont - Lobbes, Belgium

Methods:

In this prospective, randomized study 39 patients were binocularly implanted with two different trifocal IOLs (20 with 677MY and 19 with FineVision). Morphological and functional outcomes were assessed 7 days, 1, 3, 6 months and 1 year postoperatively. Distance-corrected and uncorrected visual acuities (VA) were tested at distance (4 m), intermediate (67 cm) and near (40 cm) using ETDRS charts. Binocular defocus curves were obtained with the subject’s best distance correction in place. Glare test, contrast sensitivity, pupillometry were evaluated objectively with the MonPackOne system (Metrovision). Patient satisfaction was assessed using the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (VFQ).

Results:

The postoperative refraction and uncorrected VA for all distances were similar in both groups during the follow-up period. There was no statistically significant difference in the measured binocular uncorrected and corrected VA (P>0.05). Contrast sensitivity in mesopic conditions showed better results for Bi-Flex 677MY but the difference was not statistically significant. The binocular defocus curves did not differ significantly at any of evaluated vergences (-4.0D .. +4.0D), and no significant difference was observed in the areas under the defocus curves either. There were no statistically significant differences between the groups in the VFQ scores (P>0.05 in all cases).

Conclusions:

Both trifocal lenses provided excellent distance, intermediate and near vision. The results demonstrate similar performance in terms of all clinical and functional tests implemented. Both the Bi-Flex 677MY and the FineVision IOLs provided high patient satisfaction, and all patients in both study groups were glass independent after the IOL implantations.
