Abstract Details
Purpose:
To assess the post-operative visual outcomes for distance, intermediate and near vision in patients undergoing cataract surgery and implantation of the Alcon Acrisof IQ Panoptix trifocal premium IOL.
Setting:
Single centre, private ophthalmology clinic; The Tygervalley Eye & Laser Centre in Bellville, Cape Town, South Africa.
Methods:
42 eyes of 21 patients had uncomplicated cataract surgery with implantation of the Alcon Acrisof IQ Panoptix trifocal IOL. A capsular tension ring was used in the dominant eye, while no tension ring was used in the fellow eye. Eyes with any affection other than cataract were excluded from the study. IOL calculation was done with multi-formulae. Post-operative uncorrected visual acuity and best-corrected visual acuity for distance, intermediate and near vision were recorded at 6 weeks and 3 months post-operatively. The predicted target refraction was also compared to the post-operative spherical equivalent achieved.
Results:
At 3 months post-operatively the mean uncorrected distance visual acuity achieved was 0.8 in the dominant and the non-dominant eye. The mean uncorrected intermediate visual acuity was 0.5 in both groups and the mean uncorrected near visual acuity was 0.9 in both groups. The mean predicted target refraction was -0.21 for the dominant eye and -0.47 for the non-dominant eye. The achieved post-operative spherical equivalent was -0.02 in the dominant eye and -0.26 in the non-dominant eye.
Conclusions:
The Alcon Acrisof IQ Panoptix trifocal IOL is a safe and effective lens choice to provide good distance, near and intermediate vision with little or no night vision problems. The use of a capsular tension ring made no difference in the post-operative refractive outcome.
