Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report the results of the visual acuity (VA), mean spherical equivalent (SE) refraction, and to determine a subjective patient satisfaction after implantation of trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) model AcrySof IQ PanOptix (Alcon, USA).

Setting:

Ophthalmology department, The Republican Research Center for Radiation Medicine and Human Ecology, Gomel, Republic of Belarus.

Methods:

The study included 11 patients (21 eyes) with cataract. Mean age was 59.3±6.4 years. Phacoemulsification with the implantation of IOL PanOptix were performed according to the standard technique between October 2016 and December 2017. One patient (2 eyes) has capsular tension ring implantation. VA measured monocular and fixed according to the logMAR tables. The analyzed indicators for 1, 6, 12 months were uncorrected VA (UCVA) and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and mean SE. Satisfaction and preferences of patients, halo frequency and other adverse effects were noted. The frequency of dysphotopsia and quality of vision were evaluated by questionnaire.

Results:

The mean logMAR (4 m, 66 cm, 33 cm) UCVA at 1 month was 0.08 ±0.10, 0.25±0.10, 0.09±0.05, BCVA - 0.01±0.05, 0.22±0.09, 0.06±0.05 respectively. The mean logMAR (4 m, 66 cm, 33 cm) UCVA at 6 month was 0.05±0.05, 0.20±0.06, 0.08±0.04, BCVA - 0.01±0.03, 0.16±0.06, 0.05±0.04 respectively. The data of the examination of UCVA and BCVA in 12 months didn’t differ from the values of 6 months. The mean SE were -0.39±0.30, -0.30±0.27, -0.27±0.26 at 1, 6 and 12 months respectively. All patients were satisfied. No patient noted a need to use any spectacle correction after surgery.

Conclusions:

Improvement of visual acuity at three distances 6-12 months after surgery was associated with a stabilization of refractive results. The trifocal IOL PanOptix provides good near, intermediate and far distance visual functions. Postoperative period was characterized by a high patient satisfaction and high spectacle correction independence.
