Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate angle kappa changes following the implantation of a diffractive trifocal intraocular lens

Setting:

IOA Madrid Innova Ocular, Madrid, Spain

Methods:

The study involved 58 patients undergoing symmetric bilateral IOL implantation, although only the participants’ right eye was included in the study. The implanted lens was a hydrophilic apodized trifocal IOL (POD F, PhysIOL, Belgium). The study’s primary outcome variable was angle kappa variation. A questionnaire about far vision, halos, and the overall level of satisfaction was completed by the participants at the 3-month follow-up visit to know if there was a correlation between kappa post-op angle and patient satisfaction

Results:

There was a statistically significant difference between pre-op and post-op angle kappa values (p = 0.034). Moreover, the postop-vs.-preop angle kappa differences were strongly correlated with preoperative angle kappa (p<0.001), spherical equivalent (p=0.001), axial length (p=0.004) and anterior chamber depth (p<0.001). The correlation between the questionnaire’s resulting score and the rest of the variables didn´t show any statistically significant correlations, except for the pair “level of satisfaction with far vision“ question and the postoperative UCVA value

Conclusions:

No correlation was found between halos and either preoperative or postoperative angle kappa. However, we observed that angle kappa itself does change after diffractive trifocal IOL implantation and it is correlated with its preoperative value
