Clinical outcomes of cataract surgery with a new trifocal toric intraocular lens

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To assess the visual performance, refractive results, rotational stability and patient reported outcomes, i.e. spectacle independence and photic phenomena of a new diffractive trifocal toric intraocular lens (IOL) (AcrySof IQ PanOptix Toric, Alcon Laboratories Inc, Fort Worth, TX, USA).

Hospital da Luz, Lisbon, Portugal.
Methods:
This prospective case series included 20 patients (40 eyes) submitted to cataract surgery with the implantation of an AcrySof IQ PanOptix Toric IOL. The main outcome measures at 3 months post-operatively were uncorrected visual acuities for distance (UDVA), intermediate at 60 cm (UIVA) and near at 40 cm (UNVA), residual spherical equivalent (SE) refraction, residual astigmatism, rotational stability, reported photic phenomena and spectacle independence. The defocus curve was also evaluated.
Results:
Binocular UDVA was 0.1 logMAR or better in all patients. Binocular UIVA was 0.1 logMAR or better in 18 (90%) patients. Binocular UNVA was 0.1 logMAR or better all patients. Mean postoperative SE was -0.06 ±0.19 D. All eyes were within ±0.50D of the intended SE correction. Mean astigmatism correction index (Alpins’ method) was 0.92. Mean toric IOL misalignment was 1.97 ±1.88°. 2 patients (10%) reported moderate haloes or glare. All patients were spectacle independent. The defocus curve showed two peaks (0.00 and -2.00 D), with a visual acuity of 0.1 logMAR or better maintained between -3.00 and +0.50 D.
Conclusions:
The implantation of the new AcrySof IQ Panoptix Trifocal Toric IOL in patients with cataract and corneal astigmatism provided excellent distance, intermediate and near visual outcomes, predictability of refractive results, rotational stability and optical performance, allowing all patients in our series to achieve spectacle independence.
