Visual outcomes following implantation of two diffractive-refractive trifocal intraocular lens types

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the clinical outcomes of cataract and refractive lens exchange surgery using novel diffractive-refractive trifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs).

Setting:

Multidisciplinary Science and Technology Complex Eye Microsurgery named after Academician S. N. Fyodorov, Federal State Institution, Novosibirsk Branch, Russia

Methods:

A retrospective analysis of the results of diffractive trifocal intraocular lens implantation after cataract surgery and refractive lens exchange surgery. Forty five eyes (twenty seven patients) were included in the analysis. Patients were divided into two groups. 1st group - 17 eyes (9 patients) were implanted with AT LISA tri 839 MP IOL (ZEISS, Germany), 2nd group - 28 eyes (18 patients) underwent surgery with ACRYSOF IQ PANOPTIX IOL (Alcon, USA). Refractive results were assessed in 1 week, 3 and 6 months. Uncorrected and corrected visual acuity at varying distances, defocus curve were assessed at 1 and 12 months.

Results:

98,7% eyes in both groups achieved a three month postoperative monocular uncorrected distance visual acuity of 0,10 logMAR (Snellen 20/25) or better. 95,6% (1st group) and 65,71% (2nd group) of eyes achieved a postoperative monocular uncorrected intermediate, and near visual acuity of 0,20 logMAR (Snellen 20/30) or better. Refractive results showed high IOL power assessment predictability in 1, 6, and 12 months. 100%, 100%, and 84% patients underwent surgery with AT LISA tri 839 MP IOL and 96.5%, 89%, and 100% patients underwent surgery with ACRYSOF IQ PANOPTIX IOL had ±0.5 D refraction at 1, 6, and 12 months respectively.

Conclusions:

The differences between the results in both patient groups were not significant. After surgery, all patients were fully independent of glasses. All patients reported a good or very good visual quality at far, intermediate, and near distances. Patient satisfaction was very high. All patients would choose the same lens again.
