Clinical results of implantation of multifocal intraocular lenses

Purpose:
To evaluate and compare the visual outcomes and ocular optical performance of the bifocal intraocular lens (IOL) Restor and trifocal intraocular lens PanOptix extended range of vision IOL.
Setting:
Сenter of Eye Microsurgery "VOKA", Minsk, Belarus
Methods:
There were 78 patients with age-related cataracts under observation. Ambulatory binocular implantation of 98 IOL Panoptics and 58 IOL Restor was performed.One hundred fifty six eyes (156) of 78 patients were divided into 2 groups: 49 patients with the PanOptix IOL and 29 patients with the Restor IOL. Binocular uncorrected distance visual acuity(BUDVA), distance-noncorrected intermediate visual acuity (DNIVA) at 60 cm, and uncorrected visual acuity distance near (UVADN) at 40 cm were evaluated. Additionally, mesopic and photopic contrast sensitivity, photic phenomena were also measured.
Results:
The visual outcomes for PanOptix and Restor groups, respectively, were as follows: BUDVA:0,91±0,09 and 0,93 ± 0,02, DNIVA at 60 cm: 0,71±0,07* and 0,39±0,08, UVADN: 0,72± 0,09 and 0,77 ± 0,02 (p<0.001). No significant differences were found for contrast sensitivity, halometry between the groups.
Conclusions:
Both models of the IOL provided high visual functions far away and up close. The capabilities of the IOL Panoptics for vision at intermediate distances were higher compared to IOL Restor.
