Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the potential of a new hydrophobic monofocal IOL

Setting:

Clinica Quesada, Grupo Oftalmo&Plastico, San Salvador, El Salvador

Methods:

A total of 50 eyes were identified with good visual potential and implanted with a newly developed aspheric hydrophobic acrylic IOL. The IOL was in a preloaded cartridge. The refractive target was plano in each eye. No astigmatic treatment was attempted at the time of surgery or afterward. Postoperative exam and acuity were measured at one day, one week, one month and three months.

Results:

There were no complications at the time or surgery. The IOL had predictable inserted characteristics. All 50 eyes had a normal postoperative course through the 3 months exams. Mean age 74.0 years. The mean postop refractive error at one week was +0.47 -0.95 xx for a mean SE of 0.05D. The mean refraction at 3 months was +0.655 -0.915 xx. The BCDVA at one week was logMAR +0.11 and at 3 months logMAR +0.04. All IOLs were well centered in the capsular bag.

Conclusions:

This IOL produced excellent visual and anatomic results with good IOL centration after a predictable, consistent IOL insertion. The initial, predicted A constant was accurate for this IOL.
