Visual performance of monocular implantation of a small-aperture intraocular lens: long-term follow-up

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare 12-month visual performance of patients implanted monocularly with a small aperture intraocular lens (IOL) in their non-dominant eye and an aspheric monofocal lens in their dominant eye.

Setting:

Augen-Zentrum-Nordwest, Ahaus

Methods:

Eleven patients presenting for cataract surgery, were implanted contralaterally with an IC-8 IOL (AcuFocus), and an aspheric monofocal IOL. IC-8 eyes were targeted for a residual refraction of -0.75 D and fellow monofocal eyes were targeted for a plano result. Uncorrected (U) and target-corrected (TC) distance (D), intermediate (I) and near (N) visual acuities (VA), and mean refractive spherical equivalent (MRSE) were evaluated at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months post-implantation. Mean acuity is reported in snellen equivalent at 6 months post-op. Results out to 12 months will be presented.

Results:

Mean uncorrected and target-corrected MRSE at 6 months was +0.10 D +/- 0.68 and -0.75 D, respectively, in the IC-8 eye, and +0.60 D +/- 0.71 and plano, respectively, in the monofocal eye. The mean binocular UDVA, UIVA and UNVA following monocular IC-8 implantation was 6/6, 6/7.5 and 6/12 respectively and improved with target-correction to 6/4.8, 6/6 and 6/9 for TCDVA, TCIVA and TCNVA respectively.

Conclusions:

Both uncorrected and target-corrected visual acuities show patients achieve good for near, intermediate and distance vision performance despite the differences in refractive error. Improvement achieved with target-correction indicates a slightly more myopic residual refraction in the IC-8 eye may improve near and intermediate without compromising distance vision.
