Abstract Details

Purpose:

The purpose of this study was to compare the visual outcomes and subjective visual quality between bilateral implantation of an extended depth of focus(EDOF) intraocular lens(IOL),J&J Tecnis Symfony® ZXR00V(group A), and mixed implantation of an EDOF IOL, ZXR00V with a diffractive bifocal IOL, J&J Tecnis® ZMB00(group B).

Setting:

Retrospective case series, Tane Memorial Eye Hospital, Osaka, JAPAN

Methods:

The subjects were 9 patients in whom ZXR00V were implanted in both eyes, with a target of emmetropia ( group A ), and 6 patients in whom ZXR00V / ZMB00 lens were implanted each eye ( group B ) between May and December 2017. Ophthalmological evaluation included measurement of uncorrected distance visual acuity(UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity(CDVA), with the analysis of contrast sensitivity(CS), and visual defocus curve. In addition, the patient questionnaire assessed spectacle independence, and satisfaction research. Exclusion criteria were existence of any corneal, retina, or optic nerve disease, postoperative CDVA of <1.00D, postoperative refractive error.

Results:

Postoperative UDVA was -0.07 and -0.08 logMAR (P>0.05); CDVA was -0.08 and -0.11 logMAR (P>0.05) in groups A and B, respectively. CS; there were no statistically significant differences. The defocus curve results showed that both groups provided an extended depth of focus; +0.5~−2.0D and +0.5~−1.5D / −2.5~−3.0D in groups A and B, respectively. (VA better than 0.0 logMAR ). Especially depth of focus at −2.5D and −3.0 D was significantly better in the B group (P < 0.05). Spectacle independence was 70% in the A group, and 30% in the B group (occasional use) at near sight.

Conclusions:

Implantation of an EDOF IOL with a diffractive bifocal IOL promoted good quality of vision for long, intermediate, and short distance and less spectacle dependence for near vision.
