Evaluation of patients after bilateral implantation of extended-depth-of-focus (EDOF) intraocular lens

Abstract Details

Purpose:

The purpose of this study is to evaluate near, intermediate and distance visual acuity of patients after bilateral implantation of the TECNIS® Symfony IOL. Dependence on spectacles, the occurrence of photic phenomena, Defocus Curve, incidence of Posterior Capsular opacification (PCO) and patient satisfaction with the visual performance will be documented.

Setting:

eyeCare Center, Maadi, Cairo, Egypt

Methods:

Inclusion criteria: patients undergoing cataract surgery or RLE, age over 18 years and clear intraocular media. Exclusion criteria: any ocular pathology,corneal astigmatism over 1 D, Capsular or zonular abnormalities, eccentric capsulrrhexis and postoperative lens tilt The surgical plan targeted the dominant eye for plano and the nondominant eye for -0.5 D. Uncorrected Visual Acuity (UCVA), Best Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA), Near Visual Acuity at 40 cm, Intermediate Visual Acuity at 70 cm, Photic phenomenon including glare, halos and starburst, independence of glasses for distance and near vision,Defocus Curve, PCO and patient satisfaction were evaluated after 4 to 6 months.

Results:

Prospective study included 19 patients bilaterally implanted with TECNIS® Symfony IOL,mean age is 57.8±11 years.Mean postoperative UCVA is 0.91±0.1 in dominant eye,0.81±0.15 in nondominant eye.Mean BCVA is 0.97±0.06.Mean Near VA is 0.83± 0.07.Mean Intermediate VA is 0.8 ±0.12.One patient had sever photic phenomenon and we exchanged the IOL for monofocal IOL,three patients (15%) have mild halos and one patient (5%) has mild glare.10.5% of patients need distance glasses 25% of time and 21.5% need reading glasses 25% of time.Four patients(21.5%)have PCO,one of them underwent YAG capsulotomy.Out of 19 patients, eighteen(94.7%) would choose the same IOL again.

Conclusions:

Extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOLs provide excellent visual outcomes across all distances, with minimal glasses dependence, photic phenomenon and high level of patient satisfaction. Sequential cataract surgery and micro mono-vision offer the best results regarding spectacle independence and patient satisfaction.
