Abstract Details
Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to evaluate distance, intermediate and near visual performance in patients implanted bilaterally with the trifocal aspheric presbyopia-correcting intraocular lens (IOL) AcrySof PanOptix (Alcon, Fort Worth, TX).
Setting:
Instituto Universitario Fernandez-Vega, Oviedo, Spain
Methods:
40 patients were bilaterally implanted with the AcrySofIQ PanOptix IOL after femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS). Retrospectively, binocular best-corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), best-corrected distance near visual acuity (DCNVA), best-corrected distance intermediate visual acuity (DCIVA), binocular distance contrast sensitivity under photopic conditions and defocus curve were evaluated at 6-months. All surgeries were operated by phacoemulsification with the Centurion Vision System (Alcon, Fort Worth, TX) using topical anaesthesia and a clear corneal incision of 2.2-mm on the steep-axis using the Callisto system (Carl-Zeiss Meditec AG, Germany). All eyes were submitted to FLACS using the LenSx platform (Alcon, Fort Worth, TX).
Results:
There weren’t complications in any case. 6 months postoperatively, the mean binocular Snellen decimal CDVA and DCNVA were 0.94 ± 0.10 and 0.85 ± 0.13, respectively. At distance, all patients showed a cumulative binocular DCVA of 0.8 or better, and about 80% of patients a value of 1.0. At near and intermediate distances, all patients showed a cumulative DCVA of 0.5 or better at 30-, 40-, 50-, 60- and 70-cm. 50-cm showed the highest percentage of patients with larger values. Defocus curve showed two peaks of best VA at distance and 50-cm. Binocular distance contrast sensitivity was within normal limits.
Conclusions:
The outcomes of the present study show that the visual performance obtained with bilateral implantation of the trifocal aspheric AcrySofIQ PanOptix IOL is good at far, intermediate and near distance. Defocus curve showed a wide range of useful vision, and, in particular, for the intermediate vision, 50 cm showed the highest percentage of patients with larger values of visual acuity.
